Sorry for the whine. I hope to still find a pair and if I do, I want to wear them with short and knee-length dresses and skirts. I have two pairs of mid-calf boots. The difference between the Sweeties and your current examples is their lack of sleekness. Yet I find them super comfortable and practical in our climate. I wear them with dark skinnies and very slim fitting pants; they get a lot of wear. I am drawn to having a sleeker pair; my low volume ankles would prefer it and it looks fresh.
I did pass on a pair of uggs quilted moto boots recently — pretty — but the height never made me feel fab. A sleeker pair would have been easier to style. Also since I am limited to low heels due to a new foot problem that does not help the styling.
Love the first outfit best surprise;- Also for me, prefer the outfits where there is skin showing with skirts. But all outfits so pretty, just my bias! This is actually my favourite type of boot, and I only wish there were more out there to choose from. These are elegant, interesting, and I just simply love the way they look.
In terms of difficulty styling? Mid calf boots are my absolute favorite boot style. Anyway, I have several pairs and wear them with everything! I truly think they are the most versatile boot height. Thank you for an instructive tutorial as usual! To my eye, mid-calf boots look much fresher than knee-highs, that I feel are a little conservative and heavy.
Just my personal preferences, I guess! Perhaps I associate mid-calf boots with looking young and fresh because they look so well with shorter hemlines? I have two pairs of mid-calf boots, one with a wedge, and one with flat heels.
I wear them styled just as you are recommending, and just love them!! The only boots that I have this length are true snow boots that I wear with skinny jeans tucked in and an ancient pair of black slouchy boots saved for wearing in the snow. Your excellent guide for styling makes the new version very appealing but I doubt I can find flat versions that fit sleekly on the calf for my skinny legs. I would also probably only wear them with skinnies tucked in, no short or long skirts.
I have two pairs. The first is a heeled suede boot, fairly rugged, but fitted against my leg. This provide low contrast with my skin. The second is a moto boot of burnished pewter. Wider on the calf, I could only wear these with skirts if the hems were too high for my comfort. Tricky — yes, quite right!
I had a pair and tried to make them work. From the photos featured, I do like the one with the blue coat quite a lot.
I like the shorter length of skirt and the low contrast boots. I have a pair of mid calf, flat moto boots that are a go to boot for winter. But I only style them with leggings or skinny jeans as a winter casual uniform that is extremely comfortable. Thanks for the great pics and information Angie. I would only feel comfortable wearing with skinnies or ponte pants…perhaps if they were sleeker and I was younger I would wear them with skirts or dresses!
It is great to have so many options…. This tutorial pretty much confirms my own experience with mid-calf boots. I have 3 pairs: The first two I wear constantly over skinny or straight pants, generally for a low-contrast column effect, and find them very useful for everyday.
Like Vildy, I think they actually make me look taller than either high or very low boots would worn this way. I like the way they cover my ankle when I sit down, creating a sleeker look. And they are warmer in Winter than heeled pumps. I love them, but they are not my favorites. My favorites would be some royal blue Arche mid-calf boots I bought in France last year. There is absolutely nothing better! I just bought 2 pairs of mid-calf booties and while they are easy to wear with skinnies, I have yet to try and style them with skirts.
But I love them and wear them often. I have very muscular calves and finding knee high boots that fit my legs is difficult. Once boots are wide enough for me to zip, they stick out and have way too much gap around the top.
I wear them with either skinnies or leggings under a dress most of the time. Thanks for the tutorial. I appreciate tips on making them work even better. I have had mixed experiences with this boot height- and do not currently own them.
I do like them when they are styled well though — but my heart lies with either a sleek higher shaft ankle boot, a chunky true ankle boot or a knee high boot.
I have boots of different heights including a pair of taupe suede mid-calf. I wear them under boot cut or flair jeans, with knee length skirts with low contrast tights, leggings and skinny jeans. I used to have a suede and leather brown pair, but I purged them due to heel height and a very elongated square toe shape. Fun to hear that these will be trending soon! That Chloe boot in the second set is gorgeous! I wore black midi boots with with pale pink culottes. Basically, the top of the boots met the bottom of the culottes.
Is this an acceptable look? I am really liking these with the longer length skirts. I have always liked mid-calf boots simply because they are so much easier to fit than taller boots for a woman with a large calf. I have slim ankles, but used to be a dancer and my calves are apparently non-proportional compared to other people because tall boots rarely fit me when the calves are large enough, the ankles tend to bag, and when the ankles fit the calves generally do not. I will try to stock up since it looks like the selection will be better for a while!
I have fairly long legs, but they just look awkward on me for some reason. They look cute in the pictures, but weird on me. I have a few boots that fall somewhere between high shaft and mid-calf. I love how they look in these pictures with shorter skirts, but can absolutely see the fun 70s vibe with the midis. I love your examples, but find them scary for all of the reasons you mentioned.
But I will enjoy watching the others wear them, and if I ever do find a pair that fit AND work with my wardrobe, I am willing….
I have a pair that are a light cognac colour and find these flattering because they are not too far from my skin colour and also bookend my blonde hair. I like wearing them with dresses that finish above my knee. I like to have variety in the styles of boots that I wear, and these were a bit of a wildcard for winter that worked out well.
I too love mid-calf boots. I do seem to be back into footwear with heels now, after ages of finding all heels dated-looking. Still love my mid-calf boots though. My favourite kind of post — thanks!
The typical pointed-toe design of most western-style boots benefits petite women, but the common mid-calf height of these boots may not sit far enough below the knee on many petite women.
